The Taiwan authorities are equipping 10.5 thousand bomb shelters that can accommodate 86 million people. This was reported by the Japanese newspaper Nikkei, citing data from the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan, reports TASS.

Shelters are being built throughout Taiwan. At the moment, about 24 million people live on the island, including foreigners.

According to the Taiwan Ministry of the Interior, most of the shelters are not designed for long-term stays, they will also use the underground premises of buildings, including parking lots.

According to the agency, according to the legislation of Taiwan, which has been in force since the 70s, all buildings with a height of more than six floors must be equipped with a shelter.

In August, it was reported that the Taiwan authorities began to prepare bomb shelters in the country’s largest cities amid rising tensions with China. According to Reuters, there are more than 4,600 such facilities in Taipei, which can accommodate about 12 million people, which is more than four times the population of the capital.
