Colorist Alexei Frantsuzov: practiced on a cousin, and became Madonna’s Russian hairdresser

Hair coloring expert, teacher and author of hairdressing tutorials – Alexey Frantsuzov knows all about the secrets of creating the perfect color.

French – the only Russian colorist whose recommendations were included in the textbooks on hairdressing. His professional staining techniques are studied by students in twenty-six countries around the world. And the world celebrity – Madonna, during her visit to Moscow entrusted hair coloring only to her Russian master.

– Alexey, how did you meet Madonna in general?

– I met Madonna in London, where I often attend fashion events. One of these was London Fashion Week, where we accidentally crossed paths backstage. At that moment, she was talking with the guests of the event, and I was standing nearby, after which I decided to approach her. There was only one thought in my head: “Why not, such a chance…”. We talked, exchanged contacts. I invited her to my salon, but I did not expect that this would actually happen. One day, my Moscow salon received an application from Madonna’s PR manager. She needed to tone her hair and make a light color correction.

How did you work with Madonna’s hair? Worried about something not working?

Worked great and easy. I did not worry about the task before me, because if you approach the matter with all responsibility, everything will turn out right.

– Did you experiment or act according to a given plan? What did Madonna say after the meeting?

“They sent me a recipe with the necessary proportions for the desired result, so I just strictly did everything that was required. After coloring, Madonna thanked me for the quality work and said that she was pleased with the result. She promised that if she was in Moscow again, she would look into my salon.

– And which of the Russian celebrities do you work with?

— My clients were Svetlana Khodchenkova, Yulia Volkova, Lena Katina, Sergey Lazarev, Anastasia Volochkova, Dmitry Dibrov. Of course, there were other theater and film actors, presenters, politicians.

Why did you decide to become a colorist? Was it a childhood dream or an adult choice?

-As a teenager, I decided to thoroughly study Konstantinov’s textbook called “How to become a hairdresser.” Of course, after reading the book, I needed to practice theoretical knowledge on someone, so I practiced first on my cousin, and then on friends and acquaintances. It was then that I realized that hairdressing is what I want to do all my life. But I started my journey with a little trick: at the age of 14, I got a job as a hairdresser in a salon, composing a story that I was a first-year student. I was very lucky, because they accepted me without asking for documents and without suspecting fraud. My entire future career took place thanks to the fact that I was constantly learning and never resting on my laurels. So, an interesting path in the profession led me to the position of an international technical director in London.
