The Atlantic Copper Chair of the Higher Technical School of Mining and Energy Engineers (ETSIME), of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, has concluded its tenth edition with the delivery of prizes and diplomas to the students who have completed the 2022-2023 academic year. An act that has been developed at the ETSIME headquarters and in which the CEO of Atlantic CopperJavier Targhetta.

Claudia María Bodea and Jerónimo Hernández-Gil Hernández have received their awards in the category of Award for the best Metallurgy student and Award for the best Final Master’s Project ‘Analysis of the Copper Market’respectively, while José Antonio Espí Rodríguez and Luis de la Torre Palacios have been winners of the Prize for study or technical analysis on Metallurgy and its publication in a specialized magazine. ‘Possible effects of the Russia-Ukraine war on the commodity market: mineral resources’.

Likewise, Edihson Collao and Susana de Andrés González received a special mention as interns at the Atlantic Copper Metallurgical Complex in Huelva.

“The great challenges that we are facing, such as the energy transition, digitization or urbanization, are going to need highly qualified professionals”, commented Javier Targhetta, who congratulated the School for having trained hundreds of students over the last decade “ not only in the area of ​​copper metallurgy and other metals, but also in the field of mining, steel, aggregates or cement, which are technologies and materials of the future, as well as in the broad and transcendental field of energy”.

For his part, Professor Dr. José Luis Tejera, coordinator of the Atlantic Copper Chair, highlighted the importance of this Chair, since “it represents the commitment of the Andalusian company to the education and training of future professionals”.

Created in 2013 at the ETSIME of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, the Atlantic Copper Chair is a European benchmark in carrying out work and studies in the field of metal mining and non-ferrous extractive metallurgy, with special attention to copper.

It teaches a training program in Innovation in Mining, Metallurgy and Materials aimed at students from the second year of the Higher Technical School of Mining and Energy Engineers in Madrid and other UPM Schools, as well as its teaching staff and the interested general public. in the extraction and processing of raw materials and metallic minerals. In total, throughout these ten courses, nearly 500 students have participated.

A training benchmark in Europe for Atlantic Copper

The activities of the Atlantic Copper Chair have been included in the European training project ‘SUMA Master Program: IMAGINE III’, whose objective is to broaden the knowledge of Engineering students and the search for future talent in areas such as the sustainability of mineral resources , efficiency in metallurgical processes, the circular economy and the life cycle of materials.

The SUMA Master (SUstainable MAterials) programme, funded by the EIT RawMaterials, the most important consortium in the raw materials sector worldwide, brings together some of the best training programs in the field of sustainable materials engineering in Europe, including where the Atlantic Copper Chair is located.

With a duration of two years, until December 2024, it has the participation of the European universities of Leuven (Belgium), Trento and Milano Bicocca (Italy), Grenoble (France), Leoben (Austria), the AGH University of Sciences and Technology of Krakow (Poland) and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, as well as the companies Atlantic Copper and Umicore, and includes studies in two European educational institutions, an internship in one of the collaborating companies and a master’s thesis.
