Since last October, the Hospital Quirónsalud Huelva incorporate into its portfolio of services the Aesthetic Medicine, this unit has not stopped growing and incorporating new professionals. In this sense, the most recent addition is that of Dr. Griselda Duarte Espínola, an expert in aesthetic and hair medicine.
The Hair Medicineas explained by Dr. Duarte “does not only treat permanent hair loss, but works to treat numerous alterations, specific or long-lasting, of the hair and scalp of patients.”
This type of hair problems is quite common among the adult population, hence there is a wide range of treatments focused on solving them.
The doctor explains that the step prior to determining the treatment ‘is carrying out an exhaustive and correct diagnosis that allows a detailed knowledge of the patient’s pathology and therefore is the starting point for a successful treatment’. In the Hair Medicine consultation, a trichoscopy is performed on each patient to assess the state of the hair follicles, the characteristics of the hair and the scalp and, in necessary cases, an analysis and a biopsy are included.
There are numerous causes that cause loss of density and hair loss. The most prevalent is androgenic alopecia (AGA) also known as alopecia or common baldness, which is characterized by occurring in both men and women and by presenting a high genetic and hormonal component.
With the aim of reversing hormonal alterations, the Aesthetic Medicine Unit presents modern techniques and treatments adaptable to each patient and case. Dr. Duarte points out that “the sooner the patient comes to the consultation and is evaluated in a personalized way, the better results he obtains.”
As a starting point, we find the non-invasive treatments that are performed in consultation, being an outpatient procedure, such as:
- Hair mesotherapy: It consists of capillary infiltrations with prescribed medication, which act locally, reducing the action of androgens at the capillary level. These infiltrations also include vitamins and nutrients that reactivate the activity of the hair follicles so that the hair gains density, thickness and vitality.
- Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): These are also capillary infiltrations, but in this case growth factors and proteins extracted from the patient’s own blood are injected. An integral revitalization of the hair is achieved, improving its density, thickness and growth, making it one of the most successful medical treatments for hair loss. This treatment is also indicated after a hair transplant as it helps to enhance the result of the graft.
Platelet-rich plasma infiltrations have no side effects and/or allergies since it comes from the patient himself, which excludes the possibility of rejection.
‘Sometimes a patient presents with very advanced alopecia and we detect a decrease in follicular activity in certain areas, as well as a progressive involution of the follicles until they completely disappear.’ At this time we ask the patient the hair transplant.
This surgical procedure, also known as hair grafting, consists of meticulously implanting the follicular units from the patient’s own donor area, which is usually the occipital area (between the nape and the crown of the head). Using FUE technology, Dr. Duarte offers very natural results, as well as an absence of scars.
This procedure is ambulatory, that is, it does not require hospitalization and is performed with local anesthesia, beginning in the morning so that the patient returns home in the afternoon.
Behind the transplant hair, it is important to follow the necessary care indicated by the medical team to ensure a good recovery, such as: avoiding the sun and intense physical activity during the first weeks, respecting the indicated washing days, hydrating the follicular units and taking the indicated medication are the main ones.
Finally, the doctor points out that ‘the best part of the process comes when the patient begins to notice the results of the hair graft, which is usually after the third month when new hair growth is evident’.
During all this time, the patient will go to scheduled check-ups to assess the evolution and sometimes combine it with other hair treatments in consultation to promote good healing and achieve optimal results.
