The Confederal Parliamentary Group United We Can – En Comú Podem – Galicia en Común has registered this Thursday in Congress a Bill of Law for him Recognition of the legal personality of Doñana and its protection environment.
The spokesman for the Ecological Transition of United We Can in Congress and coordinator of Alianza Verde, Juantxo López de Uralde, has indicated that “The endowment of legal personality provides institutions and citizens with more legal tools to avoid the aggression of Doñana, the space and its most valuable environment in our country.
They warn from the Confederal Group in the registered text that “Doñana has been suffering attacks for decades that are undermining her ecological health. From highway projects to urbanizations such as Matalascañas, or the most recent Natural Gas storage project in the Park’s subsoil. The dumping of thousands of tons of toxic waste from the fractured Aznalcóllar mine pond in April 1998 was one of the most critical moments that this ecosystem has suffered”.
For this reason, as indicated and as explained by López de Uralde, “The current situation of vulnerability of Donana requires new protection tools. The serious socio-environmental, ecological and humanitarian crisis that Doñana is experiencing and the insufficiency of the current legal protection system, despite the important figures and regulatory instruments that have been taking place over the last twenty-five years, force approval of this law.
The fact of granting legal personality means that any person, physical or legal, is entitled to defend Doñana. López de Uralde wanted to emphasize that “Spain already has a precedent for endowing an ecosystem with legal personality”, alluding to the law that recognized the legal personality of the Mar Menor and its basin, coming from a Popular Legislative Initiative.
«We need to take a step forward in the protection of this space of singular value that is Doñana. We believe that the precedent of the ILP of the Mar Menor opens a new way of protection for the Doñana Park”, has defended the coordinator of Alianza Verde, Juantxo López de Uralde.
