
The Atlantic Copper Foundation will finance a program for the improving the well-being of breast cancer patients through the practice of archery, under the collaboration agreement signed with FABIS and with him Assyrian Archery Club of Huelvapromoter of this initiative, which will be launched this May.
“From the Atlantic Copper Foundation we feel very aligned with initiatives like this, which are aimed at improving the recovery of people after suffering from cancer and we want to accompany them on that path of recovery, with our effective commitment supporting this program that is the Assyrian Club in our city, together with FABIS, to contribute to the improvement of patients through the practice of this sport”, highlighted Antonio de la Vega, general director of the Foundation, after signing the agreement.
For his part, the president of the Assyrian Archery Club, José María Cuenca, underlined “the satisfaction and pride of being able to develop this innovative project that highlights the importance of sport in its most social aspect to improve the quality of people’s lives and, in this particular case, supporting women with cancer”. Likewise, he has shown his gratitude to the Atlantic Copper Foundation “for its support in the implementation of this program in a joint effort aimed at the well-being and care of affected patients.”
“The performance of this sports practice is part of the work dynamics of the Comprehensive Oncology Unit of the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital and it is expected that it can reduce certain side effects of the administered therapies, as well as improve the quality of life and well-being of the patients”, pointed out Victoria Alonso, manager of the Beturia Andalusian Foundation for Health Research (FABIS).
The program will be developed in Huelva in collaboration with the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital Oncology Unit and the Huelva Association of Breast Cancer ‘Santa Águeda’. Initially, a pilot program will be launched in which 15 patients with breast cancer will participate, which will consist of an initiation course in archery and the practice of this sport, under the supervision of instructors, for 11 months.
According to the Royal Spanish Federation of Archery, there are scientific indications that the practice of archery is effective and provides benefits to combat some of the sequelae of breast cancer. Specifically, according to the entity, it can prevent or mitigate the appearance of lymphedema as a consequence of the amputation of the lymph nodes in the armpits.
The program for the improvement of lymphedema and well-being organized by the Club Asirio and FABIS will improve the quality of life of cancer patients, in addition to stimulating them with the practice of a rewarding sport. Likewise, the club plans to form a sports team in Huelva from now on to participate in the Spanish Archery Championship for women operated on for breast cancer.
