How many diet pills or potions have you tried? How many have been effective? How many were really backed up by a proven study of effectiveness? What if the ideal weight loss potion has been sitting inside your liquor cabinet all along? That may actually be the case if you stock a regular bottle of tequila in your cabinet. A recent study has revealed that tequila can indeed aid in weight loss! We could stop right there, but let’s continue: it will also assist in lowering blood sugar and help people who suffer from type-2 Diabetes!
We can thank the American Chemical Society for this breath of fresh air study. Here’s the technical aspects: A sugar from the agave plant used to produce tequila is called agavina. This sugar triggers insulin production while lowering blood sugar. The experiment was performed on mice, and the sweetener had a positive effect on helping overweight mice drop some serious poundage.
Will agavin increase blood glucose? Since it is not absorbed by the body, the answer is no (sucrose, fructose and glucose on the other hand do get absorbed and can cause an increase). “They are sugars, highly soluble, have a low glycemic index, and a neutral taste, but most important, they are not metabolized by humans,” states the scientists conducting the study. Since they are a fiber that makes you feel full, they help with suppressing appetite.
While this isn’t a green flag to toss down multiple shots of tequila after every meal, it is extremely promising as potentially there could be the development of a sweetener that actually will lower sugar levels rather than raise them. This would make a huge difference as 26 million Americans suffer from diabetes, and 2 million new people get diagnosed with diabetes annually.
